Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) se narodil v Lisabonu a vyrostl v Durbanu v Jižní Africe. V roce 1905 se odtamtud vrátil zpět do Lisabonu. Fernando Pessoa byl plodný autor, který připisoval svou práci jiným osobnostem. Během života publikoval poměrně málo a živil se jako profesionální překladatel.
